It is hard to believe that another school year is already upon us, but we are excited to get started and meet all of our new fifth graders. Below you will find some information that we feel you will find useful.
For safety purposes, students should wear sneakers to school every day and dress for the weather outside. We attempt to have recess every day in order to keep students physically active.
During the first couple of weeks of school, your child's reading level will be assessed and they will be assigned an AR goal based on their individual reading ability. Every child in the 5th grade will have their own individual goal. Please keep in mind that as reading levels progress, so do the complexity of the texts that the student will be reading. More complex texts are worth more points. The average 5th grade novel may be worth anywhere from 5 points to 30 points. Every AR goal that we assign is attainable!  Students will be rewarded for meeting their goals.
We are believers in assigning very minimal homework. Students will be asked to read a book on their level nightly (30 minutes). Other types of homework will only be given if in-class assignments are not completed. If a student fails to complete any homework assignment they will lose a behavior point and will have to complete the assignment during lunch at school.
Please send a healthy snack to school with your child daily. Please do not send candy, because they will not be allowed to eat it in class. Also, since we do not have a water fountain in the classroom we allow students to keep a water bottle at their desk (plain water only).
